Lakeland Health & Healing – Hospital Acoustical Consulting
Lakeland Health & Healing
New Patient Tower 1
St. Joseph, Michigan
Comprehensive acoustical consulting services were provided for the design of this new 118-bed patient tower in St. Joseph, Michigan. The project architect chose to use an “evidence-based design” methodology and acoustics was one on the key design parameters.
To support the evidence-based design approach, a thorough survey was conducted of the acoustical environment in the existing building.
Then, all aspects of the design were reviewed with respect to noise control and the goal of creating the appropriate acoustical environment for patients and caregivers. Finishes, partitions, and mechanical systems were all analyzed to determine the impact that they would have on the acoustical environment.
HVAC equipment noise transmission to nearby residences was also analyzed and attenuation was included in the design, even though there were no applicable community noise ordinances. During construction, submittals were reviewed for conformance with the intent of the acoustical aspects of the project design.
After completion of construction, a follow-up acoustical survey was conducted to confirm that the noise level targets had been achieved in patient rooms and corridors, and at the nurse stations. Since completion, the project has received attention and praise for many aspects of the design, including the acoustics.
